I am bullied at work and am desperately in need of information as to what to do. I am a Union shop Steward and has had a dispute with my employer, I have gone as far as filing a grievance but have had no luck as the Union has supported the employer simply because this employer has a lot of past history of abuse of it’s employees and has gone for too long now. No one has the guts to tackle this employer. What I did was to take them as far as the Union and this is all i can do, nothing beyond. The union has forced me to stop the grievance as i am not going to win if I go for arbitration, they have not resolved the underlying causes to the rise of this grievance. They have not dealt with my dispute fully, as the collective agreements states. They have denied the evidence, changed towards me and started blaming me for causing problems.
I need to appeal my case but it seems the Union wants to stop me by threatening me, emails have been exchanged and both these do not in any way show that the Union is offering me some solace, it is not my refuge no matter how much they collect dues every month, after all I am a shop steward so if they can treat me this way so what about an ordinary man on an unhealthy workplace. Please help me with the way forward.
    Thank you.

  2. Hi eunice, tough spot you’re in, and here’s why and what to do about it. You have experienced a triggering issue or conflict and have found that the system that was put in place to support you is now another layer of conflict… on top of the original conflict. This conflict too is now layered with another conflict with your union who is not effectively supporting you.

You may be, or your multi-conflict situation may be affected by conflicts that have absolutely nothing to do with you – these may be political, structural or resource in nature… but clearly you need help in resolving one or more of these issues: or help in coping.

If the first – resolving one or more conflict – appeals most to you, your first challenge is to figure out which conflict to address first – where, and how to do that will follow. To better address that, ask for perspective and clarity from others.

If the second issue appeals to you – e.g., you’re tired of the fight, then tackle this first with support from a neutral, trained listener – a coach or counselor -your workplace may provide Employee Assistance programs to help with this. Once you have at least that level of support in coping with your own stress, you may be able to better make choices that can help you navigate the next steps more effectively.
