My son has been the target of bullying for two years running now. His school has tried to keep on top of things and manage it but its tough. However, the same class my son is in, the grade 8 class, is going on a mission trip this spring to a Native reserve on Vancouver Island. Now my kids ae in a private school so they wear a uniform. What they are doing is anyone who wants to wear pink can bring in a toonie or a loonie and then they don’t have to wear their uniform, rather they can wear something pink (the school is having a red option for the boys). The proceeds from this will go towards the Mission Trip. I will try and get some pictures and post them up.

  4. I have developed a program called the ‘No Bully Zone’ show that is filled with magic and fun! It’s a great way to get the message across to students about the cause and effects of bullying. I demonstrate how kids can work together and help each other to eliminate bullying in their school and in their lives – by engaging them in interactive magic tricks and games!

I have been performing this show for over 2 years and it’s fairly booked for February this year – however we do have some spots left and I offering 50% off the fee to the next 5 shows we can fit into our schedule to get this message out! Thank you Christy for all the work you have been doing!

Get shows like “House” and “Hells Kitchen” which glorify bullying off the television.

I work in a Government office and the majority of the office have purchased pink shirts or will be weraring pink shirts in support of Pink Shirt Day. We are also planning a pink food themed potluck and our directors are coming in the afternoon for a meeting so we have sent them an email asking for their participation as well in suporting our efforts. It’s not hugely ‘creative’ so to speak, but I think as a Government Ministry office who serves the public on a daily basis, we are making a positive statement and trying to help spread the word.

  7. Bullying Prevention STARTS Here!
Research tells us that stopping bullying starts when children are preschoolers. Although there have been few rigorous studies into the impact of programs aimed at curbing aggression in infants, toddlers and preschoolers, available evidence suggests that intervention at this age can have a greater impact than at later ages. (Early Learning Prevents Youth Violence, Tremblay, Gervais & Petitclerc, 2008)
Westcoast Child Care Resource Centre in Vancouver has created a unique bullying prevention program for preschool-aged children called Safe Spaces. This innovative program fosters the development of pro-social attitudes and behaviours in preschool-aged children. Developing self-esteem, learning empathy, emotional literacy and peaceful problem solving skills at a young age reduces the risk of children becoming victims of or engaging in bullying behaviours as they become older. Safe Spaces teaches young children learn to recognize their own feelings and those of others, to use expressive vocabulary, to take action when they see unfairness, and to solve problems in peaceful ways. A five year study of Safe Spaces by Dr. Kim Schonert-Reichl from the University of British Columbia completed in 2008 indicates that Safe Spaces shows promise as an effective bullying prevention strategy. For more information about Safe Spaces, call Westcoast Child Care Resource Centre at 604 709-5661.

Our school, Aspen Park Elementary School, in Comox BC is encouraging students to take the pledge to not tolerate bullying and wear pink on February 25th.
As the vice principal I deal with bullying of all sorts and severity and want students to think carefully about what bullying is and how we can prevent it.
I and one of our Educational Assistants have promised to dye our hair pink if 300 out of 350 of our students wear pink and promise to rid the school of bullying.

  9. Tarentorus Public School says:

Welcome from Tarentorus Public School in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. Our school has 225 students from ages 4 to 13 (Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8). What makes our school especially unique is that there are 3 Congregated Special Education Classes. The students from these classes are integrated for various activities (for example, academics, gym, track & field, cross country run, etc.) when appropriate.

These are the activities that we are planning for PinkShirt Day.

*Anti-Bullying t-shirts -black t-shirts with a pink octagon. Printed in the octagon is ‘Bullying Stops Here’-on the back ‘Tarentorus P.S.’ in pink-almost 70 t-shirts were sold-we have designated each Wed. AnitBullying day. The students can wear their new t-shirts or something pink.

**Wed. Feb. 25/09-invited our Community Partners (Boston Pizza, Sault College, Ont. Prov. Police, Sault Ste. Marie Police, School Board Trustee, School Board Personnel)
*School Wide Anti-Bullying Rally-all students will meet in the gym-Video—UNITED, The Pink Shirt
-students will be divided into 6 groups, ensuring students from each grade are in all the groups-senior students will take on leadership roles
-student groups will rotate among 3 activities
    1. parachute play
    2. make pink & black bracelets
    3. banner with Bullying Stops Here!
-each will trace their hand and sign their name

**as a follow up each class will develop their own Anti-Bullying Pledge that will be displayed in front of their class. We will also have a book club for Junior age students. The book we will use is Jay McGraw’s Life Strategies for Dealing with Bullies.
